Daytime Drama
Last week while I was waiting
in the car dealership waiting room,
I asked the other patrons if we could
turn off the TV on which the soap opera
was playing. They gladly agreed.
I get plenty of exposure to
daytime drama with my clients.
How many of you could win an
Emmy for staring in your own story?
We create drama and attribute meaning
to situations in which we lack clarity.
We misinterpret and respond
based on our own hypothesis.
Often this conclusion is based
not in fact, but in silence.
We fill the void.
We forget to stop and
ask for clarification
Or to check out if our
interpretation could be wrong.
"Hey, I interpreted your
lack of response as a lack of interest
or unwillingness to do the job or ________.
Is that what you meant or am I off?"
Time and time I see misplaced meaning
put to unreturned phone calls or emails.
This is where the drama begins.
I encourage you to turn off your story.
By not trying to get the award for
best dramatic actor in a daytime soap,
you could actually win peace of mind.
