Leadership Tip

Clarifying Roles

When we are in kindergarten
we learn to play many different roles.
We are line leaders, weather reporters,
flag holders, eraser clappers and bell ringers.

As we become adults
our roles change, but the variety exists.
We have outer roles
which are our executive functions-
manager, sister, parent, etc.
We also have inner roles
which we take on-
nurturer, cheerleader, cynic, etc.

Some of us have role nausea
and would like to change roles.
We are tired of playing a part.

Many of us have role confusion.
This is a major issue I frequently observe.
People do not know what is expected
of them, what guidelines for
decision making exist or
what the parameters of authority are.

Sometimes there is not a role fit.
People's strengths, talents or attitude
do not match the role requirements.
Recognizing this disconnect sooner
is obviously better than later.

As our roles become more complex,
clarifying them is even more important.
Success in the board room or the classroom depends on it.
