Leadership Tip

A Teachable Moment

Most of you I'm sure are aware that
the President had beer with Professor
Gates and Sergeant Crowley last week.

The incident that happened
on Gates' porch and its implications
have been discussed for the
last several weeks in the media,
at workplaces and around dining room tables.

Regardless of your perspective,
both men had a role in the outcome.
Each of their behaviors and beliefs
contributed to the escalation.

We all contribute to the
outcome of interactions.
Owning our role is important.
It can help us to increase
understanding and reduce blame.

Our beliefs and bias
impact how we show up.
Recognizing our assumptions
can help us take ownership.
Negative interactions
or miscommunications
are teachable moments.

Most of our actions will not
lead to a brew with the President.
They can, however, give us
a chance to reflect and learn.
Your beverage choice is optional.
