Leadership Tip

The H1-N1 Virus is Not the Only Thing You Can Catch from Others

Everywhere you turn these days
there is information about catching
the H1-N1 virus.
From airports to physicians and medical correspondents,
discussions abound about symptoms and advice
for protecting yourself and what to do if you catch it.

The flu is not the only toxin that can spread.
Attitudes are also contagious.
Whether positive or negative,
we are all susceptible.
We can catch them from both
our own self talk and that of others.

Our self talk, assumptions and beliefs
manifest in our actions.
We express these constantly.

Unfortunately, unlike the flu,
we cannot take a shot to protect
ourselves from others' attitudes.
We can set boundaries and limit
our exposure to toxic people.
We can also teach them in
what we will and will not engage.

Being around supportive people
and creating a positive environment
for yourself can help immunize you
from the negativity that can spread
from whiners and naysayers.

In addition, acknowledging others sincerely and
simply greeting people good morning and good night
can increase the positive environment.

You can take steps to prevent
the spread of negative attitudes
into your system and organization.
And you do not have to make
an appointment for the shot.
